Silica is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula SiO2. There are two forms: crystalline and amorphous.

Silica is widely used. Silica is a raw material for manufacturing glass, quartz glass, water glass, optical fiber, important components of the electronic industry, optical instruments, handicrafts and refractory materials. It is an important material for scientific research.

When silica crystallizes, it becomes crystal. After gelation and dehydration, it becomes agate. After the water-containing colloid solidifies, it becomes opal. When the silica grains are smaller than a few microns, it forms chalcedony, chert, and secondary quartzite.

It is a mineral resource with very stable physical and chemical properties. The crystal belongs to the oxide mineral of the trigonal crystal system, that is, low-temperature quartz (α-quartz). It is the most widely distributed mineral species among the quartz minerals.

Quartz in a broad sense also includes high-temperature quartz (β-quartz). Quartz block, also known as silica, is mainly the raw material for the production of quartz sand (also known as silica sand), as well as the raw material for quartz refractory materials and fired ferrosilicon.

Silica has important uses in daily life, production and scientific research, but sometimes it can cause harm to the human body. Silica dust is extremely fine, with a specific surface area of more than 100m2/g and can be suspended in the air. If people inhale dust containing silica for a long time, they will suffer from silicosis (because silicon was formerly called silicone, and silicosis was formerly called silicosis) . The exposure limit for the construction industry has also been set to drop from 250 µg/m3 to 50 µg/m3.
