What is the difference between Mie scattering and laser diffraction?

Nov. 25, 2024

In order to solve the problem of measuring tiny particles, some people use the method of grafting two theories to deal with mixed-sized particle groups. However, there are still different opinions on where to use Mie scattering theory and which to use Fraunhofer diffraction theory. This may be a question that will never be clear, because the operation of grafting two theories is untenable in principle.

Next research findings. , even if the Fraunhofer diffraction theory is used in a large particle size range, there will be a considerable error compared with the Mie theory. Because it ignores the imaginary subset of theoretical Mie, ignores light scattering coefficients and absorption coefficients, etc.

The Particle Testing Research Institute of Jinan University (formerly Shandong Building Materials College) was the first in China to adopt the full Mie theory. The so-called full Mie theory means that the scattered light fields of large and small particles are calculated using Mie scattering theory. The Mie scattering theory is strict, and precise numerical calculations are quite complicated. Therefore, whether to adopt the total Mie scattering theory is an important indicator to measure the advancement of the laser particle size analyzer.
