Measuring the particle size of electrode material

Apr. 24, 2024

Traditional lithium batteries are mainly used in the consumer electronics market. After years of development, they have gradually become mature. With technological advancement and cost reduction, especially the strong demand for green new energy, they are used in power tools, cars, and even energy storage needs. The lithium battery market is growing rapidly. At the same time, battery energy efficiency and safety requirements are getting higher and higher, and the quality of these two characteristics is closely related to the particle size uniformity and particle fineness (particle size distribution) of the positive and negative electrode materials and separator materials. Correlation.

Judging from a large amount of pulping experience and industry exchange feedback, such as lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4), lithium nickel oxide (LiNiO2), lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (LiNiCoMnO2) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) For many different cathode materials, the median particle size D50 is usually used as the key quality control indicator. Products with different materials and different processes have different particle size requirements for raw materials, which are generally distributed in the range of 1-20um. An example of the negative electrode material is graphite. When its average particle size is 16-18um and its particle size distribution is relatively concentrated, the battery will have better initial discharge capacity and first efficiency. In addition, as the thickness requirements of battery separators continue to increase, the requirements for the particle size of flame retardant materials added to them also continue to increase. The particle size of alumina commonly used for separators has gradually developed from the micron level to the submicron or even nanometer level. As battery performance improves, the particle size requirements of materials continue to increase. Laser particle size analyzers play an irreplaceable role. At the same time, higher requirements are placed on the repeatability and resolution capabilities of particle size measuring instruments.

This time we are testing battery materials for our customers. We recommend the wet laser particle size analyzer Winner 2005. Your consultation is welcome.
