Advantages and Disadvantages of HeNe Lasers

Aug. 09, 2023

The helium-neon laser is one of the earliest invented, most mature and widely used lasers. Because gas atoms have a definite energy level structure, energy level transitions will occur under the excitation of external electrons, and stimulated radiation will be generated to emit laser light. Therefore, the laser light generated by the helium-neon laser is monochromatic light with a pure wavelength, and the wave-optic error is only a few nanometers. Has a great degree of coherence, and is not affected by temperature fluctuations, coupled with the role of the resonant cavity,This ensures good collimation of the laser output (the divergence angle is only a few milliradians). He-Ne lasers are widely used in occasions that require good monochromatic light, coherence and collimation, especially in the field of precision measurement. The main disadvantage of the He-Ne laser is that it needs thousands of volts of high-voltage DC power supply, and the power supply is prone to failure. In addition, the He-Ne laser only has a single red light and no other wavelengths of light, so the options are limited.
